This weekend my team Anwil Włocławek, finished the first round of the regular season with an emphatic 32-point beat down of Start Gdynia, the last team in the league standings. Of course this is the result we were expecting, but it was a great sign for the team that we stayed focused and handled our business against a less talented team. Throughout the first 22 games, we’ve been on a bit of a roller coaster ride, starting the season 1-4 in our first five games, but we followed that rough start with a five game win streak. The next 10 games we finished 6-4, losing some tough games to top league opponents, and we currently have two straight wins under our belts. We’ve shown that we are capable of beating the best teams in this league without a doubt, but we have also shown at times a lack of concentration and focus. We have a team that is extremely talented at all positions, and we are continuing to work to make all the pieces fit more perfectly as we come closer and closer to the playoffs and our goal of being the Polish Champion!
Personally, I’ve also had a bit of an up and down first round. At times I have been very successful scoring the basketball, rebounding and defending. However, for the second round of the regular season and the playoffs, it’s a goal of mine to become more consistent, and not have any games that I don’t significantly contribute to my teams success. After the first 22 games, I’m averaging 11 points, 5 rebounds, and a little over one assist per game (56% FG, 35% 3FG, 81% FT). I recorded 2 double doubles, 13 double-digit scoring nights, but only 1 game over 20 points (25). I am making a conscious effort to increase my assists, rebounds and steals, as well as my 3FG%. With my size and athleticism, I believe I should be defending much better, and rebounding much more aggressively. However, to my surprise, I was voted the Best 6th Man of the first round by the reporters.
In the second round of the regular season, our league will be divided into two groups, Top 6 and Bottom 6. The Top 6 will battle for top seed in the playoffs, while the others will be fighting to determine which two teams will join the Top 6 in the playoffs. Currently we sit in 5th place, but only one point separates us from the 2nd/3rd position. We will now be playing two games a week for the next five weeks in order to finish the regular season. Playing two games in a week is great news for any player; less practice and more games!
